The word Image comes from the Latin imago and refers to the figure, representation, or appearance of something. On the other hand, Vanity is defined as excessive pride and the desire to be admired. When thinking about your professional image, it is natural to want to avoid association with vanity. That is why it is crucial to differentiate: caring about your image is not an act of arrogance, but a strategy for credibility.
Image as a Synonym for Credibility and Trust
When people comment that image is not what makes you an expert in your field, they are right. Knowledge is essential. However, success is the result of a powerful sum: 87.5% is your attitude and your relationships with people, and the remaining 12.5% is what you know about your product or industry.
Your attitude is affected by how you perceive yourself. If you feel good, you look good. It's not about wearing a brand-name suit, but about projecting a certain quality of responsibility, care, and honesty.
The Cost of Incongruence: Beyond Judgment

People judge, and they do it quickly. It's unfair, but it's real. Would you entrust your money to an executive with visible tattoos on their hands and arms, or to a doctor still wearing clothes from the 70s? Professional image goes beyond how you dress or what you wear. It includes:
Personal Hygiene and Appearance: Projects care and order.
Non-Verbal Communication: Can you close a sale if you speak quietly and always look down? This differs greatly from the person who confidently moves their hands, maintains eye contact, and builds rapport to achieve lasting relationships.
Social Skills: Your manner of expression and the way you treat subordinates and clients projects your leadership capacity.
Company leaders and managers will always evaluate, in addition to your knowledge, what you project through your image to be chosen as the ideal candidate. This is what image is about: being a decisive factor in achieving your goals.
