Professional Image for University Students: The Key That Overcomes a Lack of Experience

Ale Marroquín

After working for many years in the financial industry, I saw how companies hired young people who were still in college. They weren't expected to have extensive professional experience, but they were expected to have a good attitude, a desire to learn, and a commitment to starting a career. The big question is: who gets to stay and who doesn't?

While it often seems unfair that recent graduates can't find a job due to a lack of experience, the reality is that the differentiating factor goes beyond your resume. Your professional image is the key to demonstrating your value.

The Anecdote That Teaches Us an Invaluable Lesson

A colleague hired a university student who came recommended by a family member, without going through the normal selection process. The young man didn't last two months at the company. His physical appearance reflected a lack of order, and his attitude showed no interest in his assignments. When asked to do things, he would respond slowly and get distracted by superficial matters.

The demands began to grow, and instead of asking for help or trying to solve things, he decided to quit. He didn't give his boss the benefit of understanding how he wanted things done and preferred to leave, prematurely closing a door.

The Keys to Projecting a Solid Professional Image

If you are in college and want to gain work experience, it is important that your professional image shows you are responsible and have credibility.

  • Appearance and Dress: For men, a well-groomed haircut, a simple suit, and a tie. For women, a serious and not-too-casual outfit. The way you dress reflects the seriousness you give to the job.

  • Verbal and Non-Verbal Language: In an interview, maintain good posture. Listen before you speak and choose your words carefully. Avoid inappropriate vocabulary, even if you are young, as it can reflect a lack of seriousness.

  • Positive Attitude: A good attitude is your greatest asset. People want to work with energetic individuals who are willing to learn and solve problems. If you show enthusiasm and responsibility, you will become a valuable asset to any team.

If your classes do not allow you to work at the same time, it is better not to commit, because your professional image can be affected, and you don't want to close doors to future opportunities. Projecting seriousness, responsibility, and the ability to solve situations is the best way to ensure a path to success.
