Professional Attitude: Is Your Enthusiasm Genuine or Just Overacting?

Ale Marroquín

In everything I have seen and read about Attitude, I recently discovered something contradictory: Can a very good professional attitude actually be counterproductive?

There is a person at work who handles their attitude in the most positive way to find clients or connect with colleagues; however, the rest of their coworkers describe her as lacking sincerity and being a bit forced. It is true that your attitude can take you much further than your product knowledge, but the problem is when your actions don't look spontaneous and project a different behavior than the one you intend.

The Thin Line Between Energy and Invasion

professional attitude

Surrounding yourself with people with whom you can share your positive attitude and joyful energy can result in professional success, not just for you, but for your team. This speaks to being a good leader.

However, to achieve this positive impact, you must be considerate of those around you.

  • Respecting Space: You must not invade personal spaces or ignore the work environment.

  • Volume and Calm: You must respect the silence and calm in the office, instead of demonstrating exaggerated energy.

  • Practical Example: It is one thing to greet people effusively and say, "Good Morning!" and quite another to arrive shouting through the office and interrupting the tranquility of others.

Authentic Leadership vs. Forced Behavior

How complicated can it be to have a very good professional attitude and not know how to project that this is the way to grow professionally? The last thing you want is to cause people to stop respecting your work.

  • Avoid Overacting: Too much action can make you seem insincere and look like you are overacting to demonstrate energy.

  • Prioritize Sincerity: Your behavior must be consistent with your inner self. Authentic leadership is contagious because it is real.

It is not difficult to manage your positive attitude and successfully inspire people instead of scaring them away. Give it a try!
