Make It Personal: The Power of Direct Communication to Build Client Loyalty

Ale Marroquín discussing direct communication and client loyalty

With modern advancements and technology, it is increasingly easy to take advantage of digital tools to bridge long distances in our daily communication, whether within the same city or across countries.

Recently, one of my clients pointed out to his team that a generational divide often explains why younger professionals prefer digital tools—such as emails and messaging—to avoid visiting clients in person. In contrast, professionals from previous generations, who did not grow up with these applications, consistently prefer face-to-face meetings.

I understand the desire to be practical and leverage technology to connect with others, but nothing compares to making it personal. When you meet in person, you create a stronger connection and reinforce relationships, establishing a solid bond that is much harder to break. The alternative is learning to refine your remote communication so well that it feels as if you are right in front of them, though we know that is not easy for everyone.

Body Language and Nonverbal Communication

Nothing replaces a genuine smile and the positive reaction it sparks in the other person. It is not the same as looking someone in the eye, showing them that they matter, and creating an authentic connection. Your posture and the energy you project when listening in person clearly convey that the other person is a priority to you.

Strengthening Communication to Earn Loyalty

Of course, there are clear benefits to using technology for client communication, especially when dealing with long distances, reducing operational costs, and optimizing productive time. However, whenever you have the opportunity to meet in person, make it personal.

If you want loyal clients and enduring business relationships, do not hide behind emails, text messages, or phone calls. Value your communication, strengthen your connections, and earn long-term loyalty.
