Assertive Communication at Work: Lead with Respect, Not Shouts

Ale Marroquín sonriendo

Is it right, even if you are in the right, to yell at someone else in public because they didn't do their job well? Being arrogant and yelling at people doesn't give you an image of authority; on the contrary, respect is lost, and it harms the way you relate to others. Have you heard that it's always said: "treat others as you would like to be treated"?

Public Shaming: A Mistake That Costs Respect

On one occasion, a woman from an administrative department started yelling at three members of a sales team in front of the entire office. They had made a mistake on a project because they had incorrectly processed a procedure. Apparently, the situation was quite serious.

She exposed the individuals in front of everyone and only showed arrogance and haughtiness. No one was left with a good impression of this woman, as power or knowledge is not demonstrated by trying to belittle others. That never adds professional value to you.

The Power of Calmness and Assertive Communication at Work

Comunicación Asertiva en el Trabajo

If you need to talk to someone to point out an error, it's best to ask to meet in an office or a closed space to talk calmly and without exposing anyone. Even in a closed space, it's best not to yell or abuse hierarchies. Trying to be assertive and firm produces better results in people's reactions.

This speaks to having the situation under control and knowing how to stay calm. People are more likely to react negatively to yelling and aggression. What do you prefer?

Test it out: stay calm, be assertive, and above all, be firm. You will see how assertive communication at work brings better results and demonstrates the example of a good leader.
